It is often said that everyone has a story in their heart, but few choose to put it in writing and share it with others. Unfortunately, not everyone is born with a flair for writing, and several people find it difficult to put their thoughts into text. With appropriate training and practice it is possible to tell a story effectively and captivate the imagination of the reader. To promote this kind of training exercise, Selena A. Sparks has created a concise workbook titled The Interactive Writing Prompt Workbook. Spread across 174 pages the workbook is organized into 13 chapters and three bonus sections, all aimed at making young minds think and put the thoughts into paper.
The book starts off with a brief introduction addressed to new storytellers, the broad aims of this exercise is listed which include; learning the construction of stories; how to transform heroes from ‘eh’ to “epic”; writing in your own voice; creating an alternative world through stories, and with your creativity. Each prompt is creative and fun and designed to make the young writer think before starting the story. The beauty of this book is that it not only promotes creativity but also enhances the literacy skills. A perfect activity book for the long holidays that are coming up, when it is too cold to go out and play, it is time better spent than in front of the television or gaming console.
I got this book as a gift for my creative granddaughter. She has a vivid imagination and through this workbook she can express them and maybe one day become a real writer. This book has given direction, approach, and discipline to an otherwise erratic activity. Each activity in this book is designed to make children engage completely so there is no boredom associated.
This book also promotes learning of the language and writing, without uttering a single word. The games, quizzes, jokes, etc. in the book give the child a purpose and a direction to grow into a writer. The badges and accomplishments make children feel proud of their achievements. The parent/teacher guide at the beginning of each chapter provides valuable tips to channel the child’s creativity in the right direction without being too restrictive.
Overall I would say that this book is one of the few educational volumes that feels more like fun than learning. I would totally recommend this book for parents and teachers to get for the children in their charge so they can raise creative, smart, and dedicated kids.
