My rating: 5 of 5 stars

According to the American Liver Foundation over 100 million people in the United States suffer from nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. A staggering number of seniors are victims of this condition and need urgent help to modify lifestyle, diet, and improve health so as not to go into a full-blown wellness challenge. Most common reasons that lead to development of this condition is increased body fat (over 30% of Americans are obese); diabetes, or high cholesterol. After heart disease diabetes is perhaps the most prevalent disease in the US.
In this scenario it is important for lifestyle modifications to prevent and even reverse this condition. One way to do it is to modify dietary habits and include foods that improve liver health and function. To aid in this journey Lucy Madron brings you a comprehensive recipe book appropriately titled Fatty Liver Diet Cookbook for seniors. The aim of this book is to provide everyday recipes that are easy to prepare, support liver health, and improve energy for seniors seeking wellness and health.

In the introduction Madron sets the stage a delicious journey towards health and wellness. “The air is fragrant with the enticing aroma of fresh herbs, mingling beautifully with the warmth of a lovingly prepared home-cooked meal,” writes Madron emphasizing that the primary focus of this concise 81-page volume is to provide necessary tools and information on creating flavorful, easy-to-make meals that nourish the soul and body.

Chapters four through eight present recipes to cover all meals of the day breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks and desserts too. Vibrant salads, hearty soups, comfort food, satisfying lunches and dinners not only for individuals but for gatherings too. My favorite chapters include seven and eight, the former deals with vegetarian recipes and the latter desserts and drinks. I have a major sweet tooth and I am a vegetarian, hence I naturally gravitated towards these chapters.

How to master making Sweet Dessert Drinks

Ninja Slushi Cookbook for Beginners: Unleash Your Creativity And Become A True Slush Master! Create Unique And Surprising Flavor Combinations To ... And Thirst-quenching Slushes In The UniverseNinja Slushi Cookbook for Beginners: Unleash Your Creativity And Become A True Slush Master! Create Unique And Surprising Flavor Combinations To ... And Thirst-quenching Slushes In The Universe by Kimberly Doris

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Cooking – be it starter, entre, accompaniment, or dessert – is an art and takes time, effort, and great training to get good at and become a master. Not everyone can be a master of all types of food items. In professional settings there are specialists that do only baking, cooking, barbeque, grilling, pastries, etc. These are people specially trained and experienced in their specific area of expertise. Similarly preparing drinks be it alcoholic or non-alcoholic requires training, hard work, and practice. Becoming an expert in these fields takes more than practice, an intimate knowledge of the liquid, flavoring, sweetening, etc.
To help amateur slushy makers comes the Ninja Slushi Cookbook for Beginners by Kimberly Doris, which breaks down the art of slushy making. Doris starts off the book by introducing the slushy to the readers. A Slush aka slushy or slushie is an icy drink which is presented as a riot of colors and flavors on a hot day, to help cool off while enjoying the taste and sweetness of the beverage. The slushy is popular during hot summer days and it is appeal is not just in the sweetness but also in endless flavors and children love the colorful nature of the drink.
A key piece of equipment to make the best slushies include the Ninja Slush Machine, a remarkable tool that helps one create those flavorful icy beverages loved by everyone during summer months. Spread over 110 pages this book provides detailed information about the machinery, ingredients, preparation style, tips and tricks to make great slushies, and of course several ready to make recipes. Chapters that present recipes include a variety of materials and methods of making slushies. Starting off with the tried and tested fruit slushie recipes, the book follows a familiar pattern with presenting frozen slushies, soda-based slushies, healthy frappe, milkshakes, tea-based, spiked, and sugar-free slushies. The final two chapters are dedicated to ideas on slushy partying and how to effectively unfreeze/ thaw slushie raw material and then a bonus section on recipes beyond the slushy.
A measurement comparison table helps amateurs measure ingredients accurately. The recipes are easy to follow and self-explanatory when implemented right will make transform the experimental slushy maker to an expert.

Pickling and Fermentation the Japanese way

Japanese Pickled Vegetables: The Ultimate Guide to Pickling and Fermentation Techniques and Recipes for Beginners and Beyond (Cookbook for Beginners and Beyond)Japanese Pickled Vegetables: The Ultimate Guide to Pickling and Fermentation Techniques and Recipes for Beginners and Beyond by Oscar Higgins
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Pickles add a unique flavor and taste to salads, sandwiches, and in general to every meal. Until recently I would get manufactured pickles in big box stores and always wondered how to make them at home. Learning how to make pickles has been one of my endeavors for some time. I have tried different recipes I came across in magazines, from friends, on cooking websites, etc. Most of these recipes call for excessive number of ingredients and complex processes and did not achieve the intended results.

I recently got this book by Oscar Higgins titled Japanese Pickled Vegetables - The Ultimate Guide to Pickling and Fermentation Techniques and Recipes for Beginners and Beyond which seems to answer a great deal of my questions. In the introduction of the book itself Higgins makes it clear that this book is beginner friendly. “Unlike other pickling books that overwhelm you with overly complex methods, this book takes a simplified approach that makes the entire process beginner-friendly, even if you’ve never pickled anything before. You’ll start by learning the cornerstone techniques that serve as the foundation for all Japanese pickling styles,” explains the author.

Higgins is a passionate author with several cookbooks to his credit. His books are written with such simplicity that both the seasoned chef and the beginner can use the recipes and produce wonderful meals. Divided into eight information-rich chapters which detail the process, style, benefits, nutritional information, and others the book is heavy on the process of making traditional Japanese style pickles. Being a vegetarian, I find this book very useful as the focus is on pickling vegetables throughout. The reference section provides links to more reading and techniques that would help me become a master pickler.

Beginners Guide to Grilling

Mastering grilling is tough and time consuming process. Every summer BBQ will become a failure if the person manning the grill fails to produce tasty food and juicy meats. Not everyone has the necessary skills or experience to become a grill master right away. The Blackstone Griddle Cookbook is for those of us that are just getting into grilling and want to learn the basics and slowly progress towards mastery.

Presented as the ultimate guide to becoming a grill master by Robbie Kev, the Blackstone Griddle Cookbook spans a bit shy of 100 pages and is an easy to read and understand primer. Neatly organized into three introductory sections in which Kev gives a short history and evolution of grilling techniques, temperature control, blackstone grilling, essential tools and finishes off with a chapter dedicated to choosing the right meat to be a successful grill master.

The next sections deal with specific types of food/ meats including beef, poultry, fish and seafood, etc. There is a complete chapter on vegetarian and vegan grilling techniques and options. I liked the section on preparing desserts on the griddle which includes simple staples like pancakes, to complex sweets like the white chocolate raspberry s’mores. Each recipe has detailed instructions, materials needed, and an approximate preparation time.

Overall this book can serve as a good primary guide to starting off on the grilling journey with the black stone griddle.

Book Review

Handbook on Making Delectable Pickles

Whenever I make a sandwich the most important items I add is not mayo, or meat, rather it is the pickled vegetables including jalapenos, banana peppers, dill slices, etc. It is true the bread, meats, cheese, etc. provide the bulk of calories and nutrition in a sandwich, but without the pickled vegetables there is no allure to the complete meal.

Personally speaking I have always bought pickles from the grocery store, that is until now. I just chanced upon the book Super Easy Pickling and Fermentation - 3-in-1 Cookbook for beginners, by Oscar Higgins which details the processes, tricks, and nuances to make tasty, nutritious, and healthy pickles in the comfort of your home. Making pickles at home not only gives us the satisfaction but also saves a ton of money - great in this economy.

The book divided into three convenient parts for easy reading and learning is a detailed guide for the beginner and a great primer for those with experience. The first part titled Pickling and Fermentation for Beginners deals with the basic questions on how to get started, the science behind pickling, advancing the techniques, and finally a chapter dedicated on tips to create a signature preserves. "Pickling and fermenting offer plenty of benefits, allowing you to preserve some of the food your garden provides," writes Higgins in the introduction to pickling chapter.

The second part is my favorite section as it details how to make amazing fermented vegetables and the essential tools, ingredients, and techniques. Also included are a few beginner friendly recipes to get started. The section on selecting vegetables for pickling is quite an eye opener, which is indeed the separation between great pickles and mediocre ones.

The last section is dedicated to Japanese Pickled Vegetables and details the different fermentation styles followed in Japan. The introduction also details the cultural significance of Japanese pickling. Different techniques like the Shiozuke, Nukazuke, Misozuke, Sugukizuke, among others are explained in brief detail in this section and provide an appreciation to the special Japanese techniques of fermentation.

Overall I think it is quite a voluminous book that spans across 492 pages of information, instruction, and advise to wannabe picklers and experienced fermentation experts.

Book Review: Quick Crock Pot Recipes

Quick Crockpot Recipes: A Cookbook Filled with Effortless, Delicious Recipes Designed to Save You Time and Bring Comfort to Every Meal

Author: Willa West

Between work and commute I spend a lot of hours out of the house, which in turn results in eating out a lot. With advancing age and a need to eat more healthy, homemade meals I decided to make some changes. One of the first things I did was to get hold of some practical, easy, and tasteful recipes from different books. This book of crockpot recipes stood out as there was no intense involvement and I could place everything in the crockpot leave for work and by the time I am home the meal is ready and warm.

I have not used the crockpot a lot and was not very familiar with the benefits, use, and preparation. This book gives us details on how to use the crockpot, staples we need to be successful, focusing on nutrition, the benefits of crockpot, etc. The first three chapters focus solely on optimizing our gastronomic lives. Which lays a foundation for effective cooking and meal prep.

Being a vegetarian I was skeptical about the number of recipes this book would present for me. I was pleasantly surprised about the sheer variety of recipes that could be prepared straight or modified to suit my dietary requirements. I particular like the pasta and soup sections of the book. Pasta has been my go to food for a very long time. The recipes in this book such the Lemon Garlic Linguine make it even more tasteful. I have generally used the ready made soup mixes to make soups. This book empowers me with the knowledge to make soups without the high sodium premixes. Looking forward to living a more healthy life with home cooked meals.
